Scandit has just released Barcode Scanner SDK Version 6.0 for native iOS and Android, delivering improved MatrixScan and Augmented Reality (AR) performance, a new, more modular API, more extensive  documentation, better code samples and additional viewfinder customization.

This release covers native iOS and Android – mobile frameworks such as Cordova or Xamarin will be supported with subsequent 6.x releases.

The Scandit Barcode Scanner SDK enables enterprises to transform any smart device into a high-performance data capture tool that brings unrivaled scanning performance to any app.

MatrixScan captures an entire set of barcodes in a single scan sequence. This capability enables a multitude of use cases that increase the efficiency and convenience of data capture processes. Internal Scandit tests show that scanning a set of 25 boxes on a shelf using MatrixScan can now be done three times faster than with traditional scanners.

Adding AR-overlays to an app means that after the scan, information is instantly displayed on the device screen. Examples – a retail employee who is doing markdown and inventory spot check can simply point a smartphone camera at a shelf and see their tasks in the phone’s viewfinder superimposed over the products; a delivery driver hovers the smartphone-scanner over a set of packages and sees delivery instructions.

Improved MatrixScan and AR Performance

MatrixScan now displays Augmented Reality overlays in a smoother way while in motion. This is thanks to a higher frame rate of up to 100% and improved scanning performance in general.

You can see in the video above that even using a low-cost, mid-range Samsung J7 device, the tracking and motion with MatrixScan is smooth. This improved performance enables you to introduce mid-range devices comparable to the Samsung J7 to business processes, and bring barcode scanning to the next level with minimal hardware costs.

These improvements make industry-specific workflows that depend on MatrixScan and AR much easier and faster to perform. Scanning multiple barcodes at once with MatrixScan as well as displaying AR information over items can now be introduced in processes where people use mid-range smartphones.

A store associate can inspect shelves and perform tasks like markdown, label correction or inventory spot check. Modular APIs and More Extensive Documentation

The Scandit Barcode Scanner SDK ships with a new API that addresses some of the weaknesses of the 5.x API and offers a more modular structure, paving the way for new data capture modalities we will be adding in subsequent releases.

In the new API, Scandit Capture Core works as a foundation for all Scandit SDK functionalities. It contains classes and interfaces shared between the data capture modules and is the foundation of all data capture related functionality. Data capture functionalities such as barcode scanning are then called as single modules which perform these specific tasks.

We’ve also introduced more extensive documentation in a user-friendly layout to make it easier to find your way around the Scandit Barcode Scanner SDK. Learn more in the iOS and Android documentation.

Better Code Samples

The best way to start working with the Scandit Barcode Scanner SDK Version 6.0 is to run one of the Scandit sample apps. We have created both simple and advanced samples that show you how to capture barcodes and how to use MatrixScan functionality. The simple samples enable you to get going quickly, while the advanced samples show you how to use additional settings and setup the smart device for the best user experience.

With the 6.0 release, all our code samples have been rewritten to be even more consistent across platforms and user friendly. All our ready-to-use code samples for iOS and Android are now on Github.

Viewfinder Customization

We’ve made it easier to customize the viewfinder UI – e.g.  hide/move a torch icon or choose a color for the viewfinder. The new API also features an improved way to specify the target scan area in the viewfinder.
