New Release of Barcode Scanner, ID Scanning and OCR SDK 6.6

As we enter the holiday season after a tough year, we’re pleased to end on a positive note with the latest production release of the Scandit Barcode Scanner, ID Scanning and OCR SDK 6.6. The release includes a number of new features, including many aimed at improving and speeding up processes for barcode scanning as we all look to make a fast start to 2021.

Barcode Scanning

The release features a whole range of new features and improvements – we want to highlight four features specifically here that improve the scan user experience – check out the video.

Easy access to zoom feature: If a barcode is too far from the device and you cannot scan it, just swipe up to quickly zoom in and read it.

Focus trigger: The tap to focus feature allows you to trigger the focus really fast, tapping the screen if the device struggles to focus on the object or the focus gets stuck.

Faster camera startup: The latest SDK offers a great new feature to accelerate the camera start by ~50%, i.e. from the time from the moment the user presses a “scan button” to the time the first camera frame can be processed by our scan engine. This is important in use cases where the user scans barcodes in quick succession. Please note that it is only available on Android, iOS support will come with our next release. See the advanced camera guide on the standby state for more information.

Barcode Selection API: Last but not least, we have introduced a new API, Barcode Selection API (only available on iOS currently and will remain in beta until 6.7). This API allows you to scan the right barcode from a crowded group of barcodes, providing an intuitive way of doing it and at the same time allowing rapid selection of intended barcodes.
ID Scanning Version 6.6 brings two major new capabilities:

UI Viewfinder: We now provide UI Viewfinders optimized for all types of ID scanning needs (MRZ, barcodes or the front of a card). This makes it even easier to integrate and offer ID scanning as part of your apps.

API Update: Besides the native APIs of Android and iOS, our IDCapture API is now also available for Cordova. We will keep rolling this out to more frameworks in upcoming releases.

We also added many smaller features, such as the capability to scan additional data from the back of certain ID cards (for example, the address or issuing authority on European ID cards).

Important Notice – 5.x API Being Deprecated: We are deprecating the 5.x API on all platforms (except Linux). Release 5.19 in April 2021 will be our final 5.x release. Applications running 5.x will of course continue to work. We will no longer release new features, but will continue to release critical bug fixes and security patches for one year past the 5.19 release date. Access to these security patches is dependent on your support package. We encourage you to migrate to 6.x and take advantage of our latest / advanced features and improved performance. Migration guides on all platforms are available at docs.scandit.com. As always, please reach out to support@scandit.com with any questions or support migrating your application to 6.x.
