| Developers , Product Releases

scan barcode with smartphone

Today Scandit is pleased to announce the release of Scandit SDK for the Web version 5.0, which includes a number of improvements and many new features. In a nutshell, you will get:

  • A much faster engine with a faster startup (aka loading) time
  • Support for 4k resolutions and better camera handling
  • Cleaner memory usage
  • Additional features, such as improved US Driving license scanning

All this is available without needing to change a line of code! More details on the simple migration process below.

The Scandit Web SDK just got a whole lot faster

When it comes to barcode scanning, there are two things you do not want to compromise on: speed and reliability. With 5.0, we have made it even faster than before in a number of ways, while ensuring the reliability is as good as ever. Specifically, Scandit Web SDK 5.0 will:

  • Preload the library for you, with no code needed from your side, prior to the starting the scan function on a subsequent page
  • Load significantly faster to reduce the startup time and enable your users to scan quicker than ever before
  • Bring new algorithms which are able to process video frames much faster than before.

Support for 4k and better camera handling

We have seen many improvements in smart devices’ cameras, and with the release of 5.0 we have made sure you will be able to make the most of them as well. Notably, we’ve added 4K support so that recent devices benefit from longer scan ranges. Moreover, with increasing numbers of consumer devices having multiple world-facing cameras, we have improved our selection algorithms to make sure you always get the best possible option by default.

Better memory usage for more stable apps

Memory usage in browsers can easily get messy, as safeguards tend to be weaker than on native apps. We have managed to deliver a number of improvements here which will unburden your device and make your web app more stable.

Additional features

US Driving License scanning is now faster than ever, due to a significantly improved PDF417 decoder. The update also includes improved Code 128 decoding, more parsing options, and support for IATA 2 of 5 decoding.

I want the release and new features, how do I migrate?

In addition to working hard to enhance our performance, we have also made efforts to minimize the work needed on your side to migrate. In most cases, you will simply have to change the library version and won’t need to update any other line of code. And if you do need to change anything, the adjustments will be minor and are clearly described in our migration guide.
