2014: The Biggest Year Ever for Barcode Scanning—and Scandit

| Products & Solutions

amazing fireworks

2014 has been an incredible year for businesses and consumers that rely on barcode scanning technology. During peak times this year, we recorded as many as 30x more barcode scans compared with the same time period last year while overall barcode scanning activity has roughly doubled compared with last year. It’s been equally incredible for Scandit as well: we unveiled new products, welcomed new customers, secured additional investment, and even opened a new West Coast office. In the last 24 months, the number of Scandit licensees has grown dramatically, and we now serve more than 15,000 licensees in 80 countries and process hundreds of millions of scans per year.

Here’s a recap of what we accomplished together this year:

Scandit unveiled brand new mobile solutions for consumers and employees to transform consumer engagement and operational efficiency:

  • Scandit’s Mobile App Suite for Retail—an integrated suite of mobile apps to enhance the consumer shopping experience and retail operations—provides a series of fully customizable, cross-platform mobile application templates and back-end services for a variety of use cases including: Clienteling, Mobile Point of Sale (mPOS), Mobile Shopping (mShopping), Self-Checkout, Shopping Lists and Procurement. This suite of retail apps successfully powers multichannel retail strategies from the back of house to the sales floor and beyond.
  • The new Android version 4.0 SDK (now version 4.3) incorporates dynamic features including full-screen scanning, further improvements to its unique blurry scanning functionality and optimized support for all Android devices including Google Glass.

Scandit received $5.5M to revolutionize barcode scanning…

In March, Scandit raised $5.5M to strengthen its market leading position and transform the face of the automatic identification and data capture (AIDC) industry. The investment was made by an experienced group of technology entrepreneurs and led by Ariel Luedi, CEO at hybris, a leading e-commerce vendor that was acquired by SAP in 2013.

…and expanded to the U.S. West Coast with a new San Francisco office and new key hires.

Due to increasing demand from US retailers and manufacturers, Scandit expanded to the West Coast of the United States in April with a new San Francisco office and made several key hires.

Major retailers and brand name companies chose Scandit.

This year Party City, Saab, Shell, Priority Payment Systems, Florida Healthcare and American Woodmark joined Capital One, Saks Fifth Avenue, and others in the rapidly growing list of organizations leveraging Scandit’s barcode scanning technology.

Independent industry analysts recognize Scandit’s unique approach.

Richa Gupta, Senior Analyst at VDC Research Group, wrote: “Using a device’s built-in camera, Scandit’s software platform allows for camera-based barcode scanning at any angle and with high read rates…Their software platform also provides features such as cloud services and the ability to easily perform software updates and maintenance.” Similarly, The Yankee Group positioned Scandit as an emerging market leader in software-based barcode scanning for retail, manufacturing and logistics, effectively competing against traditional hardware vendors in an Impact Report called, “Company Impact: Scandit Targets, Retail, Manufacturing and Logistics With Mobile AIDC.”

Scandit was seen around the world.

Scandit participated at 22 industry conferences and events in seven countries this year, in addition to dozens of smaller, local developer events. Some highlights included Mobile World Congress, the NG Retail events in Europe and the US, Future Stores, Xamarin Evolve, and more.
