Launching a smartphone scanning retail app with Augmented Reality (AR) is not just for big retailers. Retail technology company Jisp has just launched Scan & Save, a vouchering solution using Scandit’s AR and MatrixScan technology.
The app is for UK independent retailers and is initially being launched in 12 Nisa stores. It enables retailers and brands to give customers personalized promotions and coupons on their smartphones, all while in-store.
Participating brands include Mondelez, PepsiCo, Kelloggs, Molson Coors, and Nomad Foods. In all, over 65 products are featured in the initial launch, helping customers save up to 60% on their shopping.
How Scan & Save works
The process works in 5 simple steps:
- Download the Jisp app.
- Scan the shelves with the app’s camera function
- See exclusive product savings and promotions as they are overlaid over products displayed on their device’s screen.
- Tap the coupon icon and take the product to the checkout.
- The store scans a QR code on the app, and the discount is applied.
Scan & Save benefits for retailers and brands
As well as providing discounts and rewards to consumers, there are also a number of Scan & Save benefits for retailers.
In addition to personalizing rewards, the Scan & Save app helps minimize the amount of in-store point-of-sale material produced. Brands and retailers are also able to personalize each promotions depending on customer or location.
Additionally, the Scan & Save app is compliant with the UK’s upcoming HFSS (high in fat, sugar and salt) legislation. So coupons for HFSS products will only be available to customers who have opted in to purchase a product in that category.
Truly disruptive technology
Describing the app as “truly disruptive technology”, Jisp CEO Julian Fisher said it will revolutionize the way brands advertise their products in physical stores whilst maximizing sales for retailers.

Scandit and Matrixscan with AR
With Scandit’s barcode scanning technology, AR Information is displayed on the device’s screen with an AR-overlay. This is enhanced with MatrixScan – allowing multiple barcodes to be scanned at once. The result is the ability to digitally connect the consumer with whatever is on the shelf.
Over the last 12 months, consumers have been using their smartphones as a way to shop contactlessly and safely in-store. The next stage is to move to more advanced mobile computer vision technologies such as AR and MatrixScan.
Goldman Sachs predicts that the global market for AR and virtual reality (VR) in retail will reach $1.6 billion by 2025. While it’s currently driven in the main by gaming, the tech’s suitability for post-pandemic retail is catching a lot of attention.
AR and Matrixscan is not just for retail. For example, airline staff can view passenger details from a boarding pass scan, nurses scan to cross-check patients with medication, and delivery drivers see special instructions just by scanning a package.
