The Beauty of a Barcode

Barcodes have a very rich and interesting history. They were originally used to identify railroad cars, and shortly thereafter became an international means for product identification. Since then, barcodes have been used in many diverse situations ranging from helping robots track their location to facilitating the creation of contemporary art.

One of the most unique usages of barcodes recently surfaced in Moscow, where contemporary artist Dmitry Morozov has developed a scanning machine which uses sound and imagery to convert a barcode into a piece of abstract artwork. The installation is titled “Post Code,” and is focused on taking the barcode, a symbol of consumerism, and transforming this into something of both audible and visual beauty.
